So we knew it was coming but Maddy's third day wasn't as smooth as the first two. She's developed a pneumothorax in her lung which is basically a tiny air pocket. The doctors think this might have been caused by her surfactant treatment and we're currently monitoring her hourly to see if a chest tube needs to be placed to get the air out. The typical treatment is just to cut her open and get the tube in and once again a reminder for us that we have such great doctors that they are willing to take the extra step before having to put another tube in. The hope is that the pocket is so small that her body will repair it on its own which can definitely happen. If they do have to put the tube in, it's not necessarily a bad thing, it just raises the risk of infection.
Now on to the good news, Kristen was discharged from the hospital yesterday afternoon and got to come home. Sleeping in our own bed and getting to see our pup Baxter was a relief to both of us and it's the first step towards getting back some semblance of normal.
Please keep our family in your prayers we need every one of them!
