Kangaroo Care!

Madeline had the best day of her life yesterday! The arterial line from her cord was removed, the pneumo continued to reduce, they are reducing her oxygen and pressure treatments to the point where she's just about breathing normally with only help from the ventilator, and the plan for the morning is extubate her. She'll go back on the ram cannula (the oxygen tube placed in her nose) but that's way less invasive. She also gained 40 g getting her up to a whopping 920 g (880 was her birth weight). She has also started feeding Mom's breast milk in very small doses. At this point, the milk is meant to prime her stomach and she'll be staying on her IV as the primary source of nourishment. All in all, the day was so good, I've been nervous that it's too good to be true.

For Kristen and I, the real treat was that given how stable she is and the arterial line being out, we finally got to hold her for the first time. This actually has a medical purpose and it's called kangaroo care. In essence, skin to skin contact between Maddy and us helps to regulate her temperature better than the incubator and comforts her as she's supposed to still be inside Kristen and.....it's awesome for Mom and Dad! So so cool to finally be able to hold our daughter.

Not sure what today is going to bring but we're so thankful for a great day yesterday.

  2. Will and K,
Congrats on being able to hold your daughter. I'm sure the nurses had to pry her from you when it was time for her to go back into her incubator. Thanks for the updates. My husband and I are praying for the three of you.
